The Mac was initially the only choice when it came to a computer for artists/musicians because it was the primary platform that software developers targeted. This is mostly historic due to the Mac emerging as the first mainstream & affordable graphics user interface. The artist/musician community became very comfortable with the Mac as it supported the applications they used for their creative endeavors. As they say, first is better than better. Of course, the Mac was a very nice platform which gave them little reason to move from as software developers for the arts (Adobe, Digidesign/ProTools, Macromedia, Quark) began to take the PC platform seriously.

My answer is that either platform will give you the tools to do whatever you desire artistically. Most professional recording studios will be Mac centric so if your work will need to be sent out to someone else (other graphic artists, sound engineers, etc.) then they will most likely also have Macs. While the data files used by these software apps are typically the same between both platforms it will be easier to share info if both users are on the same platform (of course, if you are technically adept then it is easy doing cross-platform work).

Actualy does not exist a ideal pc just for audio production. But a pc, for audio production just needs:

RAM
Sound Card (buy a external one is always better then in-board cards)
HDD
CPU

You just need this, the Video Card isn't important, of course you need one, but nothing serious...

Everything you do in a Mac you can do in a normal PC. If you have a PC with good RAM and a good CPU, the rest doesn't matter. But, if you have money, buy a Mac and Logic Studio or buy Pro Tools 10 (it's not open source, so you don't need any aditional sound card of digidesign to use it)
