A stage has collapsed during a flash storm at Belgium's Pukkelpop Festival, with an official statement claiming two people have died - one at the festival and one in the camping ground - and forty more are badly injured.

Early reports from the Associated Press suggested at least four people were killed, while Belgian media outlet De Staandard reports that six people have died.

Smith Westerns were about to perform when the stage crashed to the ground during a storm. Singer Cullen Omori tweeted "Stage collapsed max almost got crushed by the tress. I hope pukkelpop has insurance bc all our s--- is broke." Cullen later followed with "Praying no one got hurt. Wtf."

The collapse follows similar events across the summer, with stages falling at the Ottawa Bluesfest and a Flaming Lips outdoor show in Oklahoma.

It is expected the rest of the day's event will be called off.

Pukkelpop 2011 can ’t go forth

Pukkelpop is in deep mourning. We truly sympathise with the families and friends of the victims.

Words are not enough. We have struggled with the decision to continue the festival. Therefore we have decided to cancel Pukkelpop 2011.

What has happened is very exceptional and could not have been predicted. We are deeply moved by all the spontaneous support the festival goers and the organisation have received.


We call on all Pukkelpoppers to return home calmly. Extra buses and trains have been organised to bring everybody home.
