Having forged his way to musical notoriety as a DJ, producer and re-mixer, this visionary and long time music veteran has traveled the globe working in more overseas clubs than any other American DJ, playing more than 500 club shows in the last ten years alone. Disciple has amassed a huge and devoted fan base; has created the successful music label Catch 22 Recordings; and has enjoyed several worldwide smash hits as well as a Grammy nomination.
DJ Disciple was born David Banks in Brooklyn, New York, with music in his blood. His father played piano with Miles Davis and his brother handled bass for George Benson. From a young age, Disciple was enamored with disco, R&B, gospel, Latin, funk and hip-hop. The Big Apple’s unrelenting musical beat inspired him to learn mixing.
DJ Disciple’s on-air work at college stations WBMB and WHCS earned him a large number of music loving fans that followed him from party to party. His first professional DJ gig took place at the legendary Studio 54. Disciple soon found himself hosting The Best Kept Secret, a mix show on WYNE where he single handedly debuted and broke tracks from the underground. His passion, his ear and his skill set made Disciple, despite his youth, one of house music’s most important tastemakers. He was able to parlay this reputation into ongoing gigs at New York’s infamous Wild Pitch parties as well as into guest appearances at clubs all over the world. He subsequently landed a mix show on Bay FM 78 in Japan. DJ Disciple was the first American DJ to host a monthly radio show, The Transatlantic Mix in the UK.
Disciple has climbed to the top of the house music ladder with DJ residencies all over the world including Red-Lite in Montreal and Motor in Detroit. His groundbreaking sets at Pacha in Ibiza, Release (San Francisco), and Ministry Of Sound (UK) would have him play these venues at least three times a year. DJ Magazine twice named Disciple as one of the worlds top 100 DJ’s. He has a faithful following that live for his inspired journeys as well as respect from Pete Tong, BBC Radio 1 and MTV Europe. When he’s not in the DJ booth, Disciple remains focused on his label, Catch 22 Recordings.
Catch 22 has not only produced hit records, but has also made stars of its artists. "Put Your Hands Up" by the Black & White Brothers was Catch 22’s first worldwide hit. Success continued with the number one Billboard hits "Caught Up," "Its Easy" and "Yes" from DJ Disciple's My True Colors album. “Caught Up” featuring Mia Cox was also used on Showtime’s Queer As Folk and was nominated for a Grammy.
DJ Disciple’s 2006 Ibiza smash hit, “Work It Out” was licensed under Universal House-Trained Records in the UK. It was listed for play on Radio 1 while simultaneously appearing on MTV, making him one of the most recognized dance artists in the world.
In 2007, Catch 22 Recording artists David Tort, DJ Ruff, Gilbert Le Funk and Angel De Frutos were pushed to the forefront of the house music scene. “Changes,” a collaboration between David Tort, DJ Ruff and DJ Disciple, was a massive club hit that appeared on several high profile compilations including Ministry Of Sound, Erick Morillio’s Subliminal Sessions, Club Azuli (Space) and Pacha Ibiza 2007. These records broke the career of David Tort.
In 2008, DJ Disciple was nominated for Beatport’s Artist of the Year. Because the Netherlands loved Disciple so much, he was added to the 1 Management roster. This honor occurred while he was completing the Addicted CD’s, which were successfully showcased at the Amsterdam Dance Event.
In 2009, Disciple continued to perform live at many global venues including Dragon I in Hong Kong, the Sneakerz Festival in Amsterdam, Viva in Colombia and Saxar in Moscow. His Internet fan base continues to grow, as those performances have now become YouTube sensations.
In 2010, the Catch 22 label scored another big hit (this time from newcomer Stefan Vilijn) with the release of “Jazmin Garden.” DJ Disciple teamed up with Dru Hepkins on the release of “Romper Room.” Producer Javi Mula (from the 2009 hit “Come On”) tapped Disciple for his vocal skills on “Sexy Lady,” to be featured on his follow up release. Also slated for 2010 is a follow up release with Dawn Tallman called “Whole World Party,” which will be submitted for the Roger Sanchez “Release Yourself” compilation. Catch 22 will also soon feature the American Idol talents of Tyra Juliette as well as underground sensation Emily Angel. Disciple will be on tour in Europe for the month of August 2010 with at least three festivals locked up.
From being a resident DJ for GBH during the Centrofly era to being the resident DJ at Le Souk and Pink Elephant and to having his own events (namely The Next Level Party and Release), Disciple continues to be not only a popular performer overseas but also a mainstay favorite in the New York club scene as well.
DJ Disciple's talent is so diverse that it's impossible to categorize him. Fueled by his limitless passion for dance music and spirituality, Disciple is an anomaly. He can both throw down at the fiercest underground club as well as rock a room full of champagne drinking hipsters. Even though he has witnessed so much history and so many musical trends come and go, Disciple’s thirst for good music remains unquenchable. In fact, Disciple is so passionate about house music that he’s currently writing a book entitled Around The World In 150 Clubs.
Although DJ Disciple has accomplished a lot, he has no plans to rest on his laurels. “I see dance music going through a very big change shortly,” he says “and I aim to change with it.” People who love and understand music know that it’s fluid, forever flowing, forever changing. It’s wonderful to go with that flow but it’s so important to always be original, and to always be yourself."
